Most buyers ask for "heavy-duty" and assume they'll get a thick bag. That's not how it works. "Heavy-duty" isn't a standard—it's a marketing term. The actual spec you need is mil thickness.

For standard office waste: 0.5 to 0.7 mil is usually fine. For construction debris or heavy loads—think broken drywall, metal scraps—you need 1.5 to 2.0 mil minimum. For medical waste bags, the requirement is often 1.0 mil but with specific puncture resistance additives.

I still kick myself for a 2023 order where we specified "heavy-duty" without a mil thickness. The supplier sent 0.6 mil bags for a job site that needed 2.0 mil. Eight thousand units. They ruptured on the first pickup. That mistake cost us a $22,000 redo and delayed the project by three weeks.

Step 2: Verify Material and Additive Compatibility with Your Waste Type

Here's the formula I use: The bag width should be the can's circumference divided by two, plus 1-2 inches for slack. The bag height should be the can's height plus the rim width, plus at least 6 inches of overhang. For a standard 30-gallon round can (roughly 30 inches tall, 20 inch diameter), that means a bag width of about 33 inches and a height of 38-40 inches.

I've rejected orders where the bag was cut exactly to the can's height. Without overhang, there's no way to tie off the bag, and the liner slips into the can on the first heavy load. That's a basic usability failure.

Per ASTM D1709 (the standard test method for impact resistance of plastic film), a bag's drop height failure at a given weight is directly related to its width and gusset design. Overhang isn't just about convenience—it affects structural integrity.

Step 4: Specify the Seal Type—Back to Front vs. Gusset Seals

Here's where most people don't even know there's a choice. The bottom seal of a garbage bag can be a back-to-front seal (a single seam across the bottom) or a gusset seal (folded sides with sealed edges).

Back-to-front seals are cheaper and work fine for light loads. For heavy loads (over 50 lbs), gusset seals are significantly stronger because the load is distributed across four sealed layers at the corners rather than one seam. Common Mistakes and What to Watch For

Don't assume that a pallet of bags means identical dimensions. Pallet loads often mix different sizes if not clearly segregated. We received a shipment labeled "30-gallon custom" where half the pallet was 30-gallon and the other half was 20-gallon. The supplier claimed it was a mix-up. It cost us a day of labor to sort them.

Don't skip the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet). Most garbage bag films are non-hazardous, but if you're handling medical waste or chemical residues, the material safety documentation is non-negotiable. Your compliance team will thank you.
